The reality of who we are -1

One of the main keys in understanding the nature of our reality is understanding, at base, who and what as human beings we actually are. This is so important that I begin all of my talks by explaining this.

On the face of it you may think that the answer is obvious. As we look around us we see flesh and blood seemingly solid biological beings, and animals and plants, interacting with us. What you must understand is that this seeming solidity is an illusion.

Our physical construction

As we were taught at school, we and all of the universe around us are constructed from atoms. All of our bodily systems, flesh blood and bones, ( indeed all of  physical creation) are basically made of atoms of elements in different and often complex combinations.  The interesting fact here is that atoms are themselves mostly empty space.  We are not solid at all.

When learning about the atom we are shown a diagram with a ball type nucleus of protons (+) and neutrons, with ball like electrons (-) whizzing in orbits round it. Numbers of all vary according to which element. They vary from a simple one of each in hydrogen, to multiple of each in the heavy metals.

Energy beings

This standard diagram is very misleading. These little ball thingy’s actually are not solid at all. Each element in the atom (and there are many other interesting bits and bobs also) are themselves nothing more than pinches of vibrating energy in different combinations. These packets of vibrating energy are called quanta. We are no more than energy beings. So why don’t we bleed into each other and our environment?

Well, the energies within each atom hold the atom, and any combination or molecules, together. Seeming solidity is just a factor of the strength or density of each material’s atomic charge. We can walk though air as it is hardly dense at all. We can sit on iron (or a bullet can pass though us) as it is much denser than we are, so the atomic energy is stronger.

This is the real picture!

What does this all mean?

There are two types of physics, each with their own laws, that seem to explain how the physical world works. That of the very big and that of the very small.

The Newtonian view of physics governs everything down to the atomic level. This sees the universe as a machine. Every particle acts in a consistent certain way according to the observed rules.

At the sub atomic level though, this does not seems to happen. In fact not only do particles not always follow “ the rules” but they can  behave in ways that give us a whole new perspective on reality.  This I will look at next time.

Aspects of reality

We, at base, are nothing more than beings made of vibrating energy.
